Rhythmic gymnastics originated in Europe at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It became an official event at the 7th Asian Games in Tehran, Iran, in 1974 and was officially approved by the International Gymnastics Federation to be included in the competition of the Olympics in the early 1980s. It was incorporated into the 23th Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California in 1984.

Rhythmic gymnastics at the Hangzhou Asian Games consists of two events: Individual Team and Individual All-Around.

The rhythmic gymnastics event of the Hangzhou Asian Games will be held in Huanglong Sports Centre Gymnasium from October 6 to October 7, where the athletes will compete for 2 gold medals.
